Redemption
“Are you going back for revenge this year?” Last year, I fell and broke my arm at mile 9.7 of the Moab Trail Marathon… because I was a complete jackass. It was my own arrogant self who did that and … Continue reading

Check yourself before you wreck yourself
I mean, I’m certainly not the fastest guy on the trails, but I’ve got more trail running cred than most of the racers here. After a full summer of big runs in the mountains, throwing down thousand-feet-per-mile grades off trail … Continue reading

Stupid Fun
“Hey, let’s go race each other uphill on skis in the dark!” Some people (probably most people) would say, “No! That sounds stupid and painful and why would anyone do that!” A much smaller group of people would say, “Okay, … Continue reading
Squirrel!!!!
Running a half marathon is not like running an ultra. For one thing (at least for me), it’s not the pinnacle of an entire season of training, emotional and physical preparation, and logistical ponderment. I’d registered for the Black Squirrel … Continue reading

Lucky Thirteen
Some problems have multiple solutions. Three months ago, Levi talked me into signing up for the Gold Rush Bike Rally. It’s a wildly-varying course with lots of climbing, some pavement and smooth dirt road, some loose gravel and sand, more … Continue reading

Closing the Circle at Bighorn
The Bighorn 100 last year was certainly one of the highlights of my life. It was a huge challenge accepted and achieved, a new emotional and physical range, bragging rights galore, and basically one hell of a life experience. … Continue reading

Quad Jock
Quadrock is a cool race put on by a couple friends of mine up in Fort Collins. It winds through some beautiful, brutal terrain in Horsetooth Mountain Park and Lory State Park in a 25 or 50 mile jaunt. I’ve … Continue reading
2015 Year in Review
Obviously, it’s been a big year for me running-wise. In previous years, I’ve hit 1000 miles only twice and that was in mid-December. This year I rolled over that fourth digit on June 20th. The pace fell off quite a bit … Continue reading

Momentum: 100 miles in the Bighorn Mountains and Other Places
It grinds on, but I’ve lost all sense of time and pace and effort. I’m so far gone that the idea of stopping seems exotic, anathema. Kate is right there at my elbow, matching me stride for stride, just as she’s always been, just as she’ll always be. I’ve lost track of when I last drank, or ate, or peed. It doesn’t matter. I don’t need anything. I run. That’s what I’ve always done, that’s what I’ll always do. I have momentum. Continue reading

Bighorn, the short-attention-span version
It’s going to take a little while to muddle up a coherent enough reaction to Bighorn to post here. So for those of you following with baited breath (if any), here’s the short short version. Race went pretty well. There … Continue reading
